OFFICE HOURS: Betsy Sadler, Marshell
Name: Betsy Sadler
City of Residence: Los Angeles
How do you spend your days? I started Marshell, a strategic marketing company supporting brands (primarily women-owned) that make a positive impact. I also co-founded MARCHÉ, a holiday program uplifting women-owned small businesses.
What does a typical work day look like for you? No matter how hard I try, my day starts with checking emails and slack. Then a very necessary cortado and some movement—usually a walk around the neighborhood, sometimes with my husband. My favorite way to start the day is with pilates at Mind & Motion. Most of my workday is very glamorous and spent on zoom or in front of my computer.
Where is your office located? I split my time between home, Neuehouse, and various meetings/events.
How do you keep track of your to-do list? On my incredibly chic Jaymes Paper notepad! I love writing things down and crossing them off—sometimes I add a task I already did just to cross it off.
Daily work uniform, head to toe? I live in my Frank & Eileen Shirley shirt or Sister Katie top/sweater with comfy pants—either slouchy OZMA field pants, Citizens of Humanity jeans, or “cute” sweatpants— and a Sezane trench (June gloom ugh). Shoes are either FRĒDA SALVADOR Jada, LoQ Daria, or Jamie Haller Loafers. Jewelry—almost entirely Starling. And, of course, my Parker Thatch Charlie bag.
Name one thing that is always on your desk: At least three beverages.
Must-have item in your work bag? 38oz Kinto Trail Tumbler of water with electrolytes and trace minerals. Most productive time of day for you? I try not to work at night, but it’s often when I’m most productive because there are no distractions from slacks, emails, or texts. Favorite part of having your own business? It makes me so happy to connect people I love to brands I love. Our clients are amazing, and believing in the people we support makes work so much more enjoyable. For MARCHÉ, it’s the community. Six months later, we’re still receiving love notes from people and brands about it! Favorite mid-afternoon pick me up during a day in the office? My brain usuall needs a timeout in the afternoon, so ideally, I take a phone-free walk. If I’m short on time, a quick page in my Art Life Practice guided sketchbook helps my brain calm down.Top 3 tips for entrepreneurs:
- Set boundaries. Just because you *can* doesn’t mean you *have to.*
- Don’t forget to pay it forward—the advice, free sessions, insights, introductions. Especially for women.
- Take charge. If something doesn’t feel right, you have the power to change it.
What’s something you do outside of work just for yourself? My Saturdays are sacred. I use them to recharge and that means something different every week. Sometimes it's being alone organizing my life, reading a book, or going for a long hike. Other days it means a five hour dinner with friends. Who are you sending your next card/[love] note to? My husband. It's a Jaymes Paper Thank You No. 03 for a gift he doesn’t know he bought me.
